About the Lab

Our goal is therapies that improve quality of life, reduce toxicity, and extend survival for patients with few or no effective treatment options

The Cancer Cell Signaling & Therapeutics Lab focuses on discovering the hidden biological drivers of difficult-to-treat cancers and turning those insights into targeted therapies. By combining cancer genomics, biology, and drug development, we aim to create more precise treatments that not only extend life but also lessen the burden of harsh side effects often associated with traditional cancer care.

Meet the P.I.

Dr. John Brognard, PhD

Assistant Professor of Surgery
Assistant Professor of Pharmacology
SUNY Upstate Medical University

Driven by a commitment to transform cancer care, Dr. John F. Brognard is a leader in precision oncology and therapeutic discovery.

As Director of Cancer Therapeutics at SUNY Upstate Medical University, his research focuses on identifying and targeting novel cancer drivers in cancers of unmet need, including lung, head and neck, esophageal, and ovarian cancers. Trained at the National Cancer Institute, UC San Diego, the Salk Institute, and the CRUK Manchester Institute, Dr. Brognard has made pioneering contributions to understanding cancer signaling pathways and kinase biology. His lab integrates bioinformatics, structural biology, and drug development to translate fundamental discoveries into next-generation therapies designed to extend patients’ lives while preserving quality of life.

Michael E. Connolly Endowment for Lung Cancer Research

Supporting promising research in the fight against lung cancer

In 2005, Penny and Ryan established the Michael E. Connolly Endowment for Lung Cancer Research, beginning the journey of a mother and son – a high school math teacher and a high school student athlete – on a mission to raise awareness and build a $1 million endowment to fight the nation’s leading cause of cancer death, after the death of their own husband and father.
